In soap, it morphs a little bit. It soaped incredibly well despite me doing a 40% water discount. By 40% water discount I mean I simply remove 40% of the water required to make the soap. I don’t use soap calc to determine what this amount is, I take the default water amount from soap calc for my recipe and multiply it by 40%, then subtract that number from my water before I mix my lye.</p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;">For this soap I used three different micas. I used Dark Orange and Brushed Copper from Mica Moma, and Dark Green from Prima Mica. I left part of the batter neutral for a little added contrast. The colours in my soap could have been a little more vibrant so if I were to make this one again, I would add just a little more of each colour.</p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;">The scent in soap (after two days) seems to have lost the top notes of citrus. It has fallen slightly flat. Sometimes I have known scents in soap to change as they cure and even had soap that lost its scent entirely only for it to return nearer the cured date! The only time this happened was with a fragrance called Angelic from Scent Perfique. It’s a dupe of Angel perfume. Smells amazing OOB but totally disappeared in my soap, then after 4 weeks the scent re-appeared. I don’t understand the science behind that but maybe somebody does. If so, please feel free to leave a comment. If the scent changes in any way I'll come back to edit the notes here.</p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;">Would I buy this fragrance again? Nope. It’s ok, bit disappointing to be honest. I expected more from it when I saw the picture on the NG website. I was drawn in by the cup of dark coffee and autumn leaves all around only to be let down by what seems like a generic scent. I think it would work much better in candles or melts. Soap can really beat a fragrance up so maybe give it a try in some scented products for the home rather than in CP soap.</p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;">I made this soap using my original recipe that you can find here: <a href="https://handmadesoaprecipes.com/products/the-best-cold-process-handmade-soap-recipe">https://handmadesoaprecipes.com/products/the-best-cold-process-handmade-soap-recipe</a></p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;">The video for the making and cutting of this soap can be found here: <a href="https://youtu.be/CU8V6J2dEaI" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-thickness: 0.1rem; text-underline-offset: 0.3rem; transition: text-decoration-thickness var(--duration-short) ease;" target="_blank" title="Almost Autumn handmade soap making">https://youtu.be/CU8V6J2dEaI</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9CrzoGWUlG9ZCeX4sZftcO4sso35aQ7WKj3AYumIZP-R06aeTOEOqPs2M7IxjWcLYrJqmNT4npt9aLT2ucbpA_WOsrojSp8OYXc24KIBpOtZIJ5puF7DQEbiANZKdovTnq4mn5Wusfs8jw-UC1T7i8bYy4YTsvAVnm517V5IZw2iCGJA15nyJbSI3BUY/s2527/Almost%20Autumn%20soap.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2526" data-original-width="2527" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9CrzoGWUlG9ZCeX4sZftcO4sso35aQ7WKj3AYumIZP-R06aeTOEOqPs2M7IxjWcLYrJqmNT4npt9aLT2ucbpA_WOsrojSp8OYXc24KIBpOtZIJ5puF7DQEbiANZKdovTnq4mn5Wusfs8jw-UC1T7i8bYy4YTsvAVnm517V5IZw2iCGJA15nyJbSI3BUY/s320/Almost%20Autumn%20soap.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(18, 18, 18, 0.75); font-family: Assistant, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.6px;"><br /></p>FuturePrimitive Soap Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12417261418364935496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6385969451342587451.post-23815835418640955832023-07-13T23:53:00.002+01:002023-07-13T23:53:52.991+01:00The Lost Boys Collection<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWnTKPUmtjP346DXOOGvQU26ckTiQY6XDGce1GvnaAJop6i0P1wM8OmpWzJieSKawvOZ3VU7ek6znsZUIDzwlDyi_O-q9EYI_fbxglZ42U3vIKqMW3V8qj5WZJCczEBg3Nmxx4ogJjstan0Hu3TX1QCl1raoOmGdXHYT3AaMq0EIw9UWkqtybvG9sHYO8/s320/santa-carla-sign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="199" data-original-width="320" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWnTKPUmtjP346DXOOGvQU26ckTiQY6XDGce1GvnaAJop6i0P1wM8OmpWzJieSKawvOZ3VU7ek6znsZUIDzwlDyi_O-q9EYI_fbxglZ42U3vIKqMW3V8qj5WZJCczEBg3Nmxx4ogJjstan0Hu3TX1QCl1raoOmGdXHYT3AaMq0EIw9UWkqtybvG9sHYO8/s1600/santa-carla-sign.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>80s film fan? Made with a parma violet fragrance, and coloured with a deep purple mica swirl on a titanium dioxide base.<br />The fragrance used is from Scent Perfique here in the UK. It performs perfectly, doesn't cause any issues or discolouration. <br />I did a 40% water discount, which is basically removing 40% of the required water in order to eliminate soda ash, and to create a nice smooth top on the soap. I find that it can cut the cure time down a bit, but only by about a week. I still like to cure my soaps for at least 4 weeks and I leave them unpackaged for some time, just packaging what I need to for orders. This helps the bars harden better as the air is constantly circulating around them as they sit.<br />This fragrance behaves so the batter didn't thicken up on me quickly, in fact I had plenty of time to swirl the two colours together, and to create that lovely blobby top!</p><p></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">To watch the video click here to open in a new window: <a href="https://youtu.be/82CKFwd753w" target="_blank"><span style="color: red; font-family: arial;"><b>YouTube making video</b></span></a></h2><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmLwZzifUBIkWK8EAxQPN6DvUOLCKNMBdEAjMAyJo5qQbzAmT861LD66TCZHBGKMbxgpEzJq0LpJTOshsKD3q9udFH-49kcq5Kj9qer1kVU5OjdoN0EoPaSAiaZrWvGjFNXbMDm6quVjEBpVGaTncx86cL-hQOu-IrgtJaq_cxFL5luUf1rM2yzoVz=s3000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmLwZzifUBIkWK8EAxQPN6DvUOLCKNMBdEAjMAyJo5qQbzAmT861LD66TCZHBGKMbxgpEzJq0LpJTOshsKD3q9udFH-49kcq5Kj9qer1kVU5OjdoN0EoPaSAiaZrWvGjFNXbMDm6quVjEBpVGaTncx86cL-hQOu-IrgtJaq_cxFL5luUf1rM2yzoVz=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p>FuturePrimitive Soap Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12417261418364935496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6385969451342587451.post-22986921891986040412022-02-22T14:51:00.000+00:002022-02-22T14:51:12.360+00:005 New Soaps..and a lil Sale<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiaAop1UXKHY5S4quZ7Un2wvQ8T-zXaUvBuW4xdjLU7yyMdtieM1diix5sy7muU_Fau4nJCraDXx0zuGJRv9djBUM_WTFgZQw8HxkIKMx5pKjZLHo_KXKZA4sQkkJT7DMhSpStgyQZaYA/s1600/temple+ball.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560094890887289314" style="WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 278px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiaAop1UXKHY5S4quZ7Un2wvQ8T-zXaUvBuW4xdjLU7yyMdtieM1diix5sy7muU_Fau4nJCraDXx0zuGJRv9djBUM_WTFgZQw8HxkIKMx5pKjZLHo_KXKZA4sQkkJT7DMhSpStgyQZaYA/s320/temple+ball.jpg" border="0" /></a>

</div><div></div><div>Yep! Been busy...and there's still more to come. </div><div>In order of appearance (top to bottom), the new soaps are:</div><div></div><div><strong>Temple Ball</strong> - a blend of Petitgrain, Orange, Benzoin (the very thick sticky stuff) and Nutmeg. Inside, what you can see is Coltsfoot leaf, which is know to aid the healing and the itch of eczema. There are random chunks of cocoa-dusted soap inside as well. It smells very fresh with a warm spicy background. 100% Natural.</div><div></div><div><strong>NonScents</strong> - a blend of absolutely nothing. Just pure soap with extra virgin olive oil, organic cocoa butter and organic shea butter. The dark line and the crunchy looking topping is Aussie organic olive green clay. Smells like unscented soap! 100% Natural.</div><div></div><div><strong>Festival 2011</strong> - a fragrant blend of heady and dusty Nag Champa incense dipped in thick, black Indonesian Patchouli with a puff of woodsmoke. This is my favourite scent at the moment and will be available as bathing grains, SWASH and perfume oil in due course. The colours are yellow, blue and green oxide with Aussie organic red clay and Dead Sea Mud. 96% Natural.</div><div></div><div><strong>Antiguan Firecracker - </strong>a tropical floral blend of Frangipani & Lilac petals lifted with Sicilian Lemon oil and Lavender oil. On the top are deep red rose petals, lavender buds (from my own bushes) and dried Chamomile buds. The colours are aqua, deep red and white to mimic the colours of my Antiguan holiday back in 2007. 98% Natural.</div><div></div><div><strong>Garden of Cupid</strong> - named by Aleyah Jordon who entered our Facebook giveaway (she still hasn't come forth to claim her prize)...so if she's reading! </div><div>A blend of Sweet Fennel, Geranium, Lavender, Ylang Ylang and sticky pine resin. The top notes are the fennel and lavender, which then warms to a floral heart. At the end of the sniff you get the fresh pine aroma...but only if your nose is good at detective work. Inside the soap is Juniper Berry meal. 100% Natural.</div><div> </div><div> </div><div></div><div><span style="font-family:courier new;">All will be available from the shop at the end of January....or if you can't wait they're up in the Etsy shop to purchase and finish curing at your end until ready on 25th January.</span></div><div><span style="font-family:Courier New;">Oh...before I forget and have to edit this post again...there's a SALE on in our online shop and in our Etsy! packets ready for sending.</div><div></div><div></div><div>I done made this 'Cyclone' soap yesterday. I didn't have a lot of Juniper oil left, and getting hold of some quickly proved difficult (and expensive), so I tweaked my recipe.</div><div>This now has a smidge of black pepper, which is actually quite similar to Juniper in that it has a lot of the same components, which make up the essential oil. I shan't go into the blurb and bore you though.</div><div>It smells so so nice. A really light, yet biting scent with an ozonic aroma. I have some available still but was running a little low. I add organic shea to the mix to make it extra good for the skin. Thanks to all who have ordered. Your soaps are on their way this week. Whilst packing them up, I thought I'd take a few pics to show the finished articles. I really like the way they look now, though I've been contemplating trying some different coloured strings. I've seen the ones I want, I just gotta go get some. I'm really happy with the new paper. </div><div>Something I struggled with for a good couple of years...soap packaging.</div><div>I toyed with brown kraft paper, with cello bags (no good as the soap sweats), with thick paper with my logo, with cloth, with muslin...so many things...</div><div>I haven't shown the packaging of my soaps for quite some time.</div><div>I think the last post I did on this subject included my soaps with the gardeners string tied around them.</div><div>I soon tired of that as it's so time consuming when packaging larger wholesale orders.</div><div>Finally I allowed myself to agree on these strips, which simply wrap over each soap and are secured at the base.</div><div>All relevant info is on each strip.</div><div>I like the packaging colours to compliment what is inside.</div><div>The paper I have also allows the buyer to see the beauty inside too. Above is the new style <a href="http://futureprimitivesoap.bigcartel.com/product/herbaceous"><span style="color:#009900;">'Herbaceous'</span></a> soap, which has had a complete overhaul.
This soap used to have the infamous black line with a white base and a duck egg blue topping.
Time for change. She has become more grounded, more earthy, more fitting for her name.
She has soil, she has pebbles, she has grass and she has a string of flowers draped over her head.
The scent remains the same. No change required there. This all-pure essential oil blend is incredibly uplifting for gardeners. Top notes of lemon-scented Litsea sparkle amongst Thyme, Rosemary and Marjoram. A nasal clearing blend, which is fabulous for giving the body a boost after a long day digging.

And here we have little Miss Inconspicuous - the new 'Lemonade Lounger' for 2011.
This soap has changed so much during my time making it. The 2 black lines were present last year, but again...yawn...I've done it to death so I changed this up a bit with a scattering of vanilla beans (and paste), again Dead Sea Mud was sprinkled inside and on the top along with some dark Muscovado sugar, which has melted into the top of the bars.
The scent has been changed a little. Inside this beauty is a blend of Lemon, Litsea, Ho Leaf and light Patchouli. Again, an earthy base note with zingy lemons and soft buttery after-wafts!
Balls of all colours are dropped through to add a bit of somethin' somethin' and the Vanilla bean paste is visible so it also takes on a dirty look. I LOVE it!
If you want to see me make it....click <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqmUL6pMqkU"><span style="color:#009900;">here.</span></a><span style="color:#009900;">

We've all heard of them, but do they actually work?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
The quick answer is yes! Yes indeed they work, but the next question is usually something along the lines of "Do they make your hair feel dry?" ...and here's where things can get a little tricky. There are certainly some shampoo bars on the market that work really well with the first use, but what about long term? What do we need to be looking for?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
Well, let's start by what we don't want to be looking for in terms on ingredients. SLS! We most certainly do not want to be smothering our hair with this harsh surfactant, especially when there are so many other surfactants available to manufacturers that are much more gentle on your precious locks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
So, ideally the first ingredient you'll want to see is something like Sodium cocoyl isethionate, or Sodium coco sulphate. These coconut derived surfactants are gentle on the hair and skin, and what sets them apart from SLS is the fact that they are coated with a wax like substance, which stops them being able to penetrate your skin. The reason why so many have reactions to SLS is because it is not coated, and can penetrate the skin, which causes irritation, allergic reactions, and soreness. Did you ever get that tight, dry, sore feeling? Like a band going around the back of your head? That's probably due to SLS, or other harsh surfactants, which are cheap and easy to source. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
A shampoo bar is basically exactly the same as a bottle of shampoo without the water. So whilst they don't contain water they are indeed water activated. So when swiping a bar across your wet hair ideally you want a bar that contains some conditioning agents, as well as some nice gentle cleansers, and maybe some plant keratin for good measure. You want the shampoo bar to gently cleanse, and condition a little too so you don't have to use a ton of conditioner afterwards. You also want just a light fragrance, not one that blows your head off. Fragrance can be an irritant due to the allergens present in most of them, so always choose a shampoo bar that doesn't smell incredibly strong. You really don't need it. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
In FuturePrimitive Shampoo bars you will find gentle cleansers, pro vitamin B5 (or panthenol as it's otherwise known), a selection of plant proteins, some organic shea butter, and a strong conditioning agent in a minimal dose (we don't want to weigh down the hair), as well as a little bit of our best selling fragrance - Rook & Raven. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />After just one use you will find your hair super shiny, and lightly conditioned.On fine hair we would recommend you use a conditioner on the ends of the hair, and leave the roots alone to prolong the shine.You may find that if you wash your hair ever day you may end up being able to go a little longer. It is certainly my own personal experience. I find I can go 2-3 days between washes, especially if I have curled my hair on day two, and have used hairspray. Hairspray seems to stop my very fine hair from becoming greasy to quickly. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">
To date, our shampoo bars have been one of our biggest sellers, which is absolutely brilliant, and great news for the plastic free movement!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Karla, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; padding: 0px;">

I decided to create a double release this season (one for the arrival of Autumn and one for Halloween) and all products from both releases are now available to purchase in the <a href="http://futureprimitivesoap.co.uk/" target="_blank">shop</a>.<br />
I gotta admit I'm pretty tired after all the work that has been put into this over the past couple of months.<br />
I just have to keep ploughing through however as it looks like I won't be getting a break for a while yet.<br />
Matt and I hope to catch a mini break in Cornwall at the end of October, so fingers crossed.<br />
In all I have created 18 scents for this release, some of which are keepers for next season and some of which are tests to see how they're taken.<br />
Here are some soap pics from the two releases:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>10,000 Pumpkins soap</b>: <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Georgia; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">The Scent: October – full of cold winds, long nights & dark promises. Days get short, the shadows lengthen. Those special autumn days when the air smells like smoke and the twilights are orange & ash grey, and right up ahead 10,000 Pumpkins lie waiting to be cut! (Ray Bradbury).</span><span style="font-family: Georgia; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;"> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">Warm gingerbread, Pumpkin spices, cold Laurel leaf and frosted soil with a hint of metal from a lightning rod.</span></div>

I will be coursing my way through the orders from the Halloween Release, which went live on Saturday (21st) then I will be working on a few Ltd Edition test soaps, then I will move swiftly on to our Christmas release stock. </div>
This year I will be bringing back some favourites from last year but will also be introducing some new 100% essential oil blends.<br />
It has been my mission for quite some time to introduce more and more scents using only essential oils.<br />
It's how I started out and I'm at my most comfortable when blending EO's as opposed to FO's.<br />
Blending EO's seems to come naturally to me and I gain a lot more excitement out of my products when using only pure oils. Luckily a lot of my customers enjoy them as well and would prefer them over FO's.<br />
I have been battling with the crossover for a long while and I still am battling but as I explore new oils to use I am positive that I will end up in the direction I should be going! <br />
<br />
A great big hearty thank you to all of my customers who have paved the way for me and who have allowed me to follow my passion by being so supportive of my business.<br />

It's been quite a while again.<br />
I made a pact with myself just a short while ago about doing blog posts at least once per month. I guess I broke my pact.<br />
Ah well.<br />
Over the course of the last 2 months I have had a bit of a struggle concocting scents for my Autumn release. I wanted to create 5 new scents this year as the release is coming out in two parts. One for the start of Autumn and one for Halloween. Sure I could have just kept last year's scents and by now would have completed the whole release, but...well....I like to change things up some. *eyeroll*<br />
What I wasn't prepared for was the onslaught of failed scents, soap batches and body whip batches to boot.<br />
I shan't elaborate on the failures but more so on how I managed to gain some much needed inspiration for the 5 new scents I will be releasing tomorrow night (Friday 23rd August). Yeah, I made a mistake in the newsletter. Tiggy wouldn't be Tiggy unless she made mistakes! (I had put the 20th!)<br />
<br />
I took a trip to a beautiful old English Manor House, Witley Court on the outskirts of the City of Worcester.<br />
As you leave the city and move closer to the countryside you notice old Victorian houses, black railings, old lamp posts, gateways and everything in between. It's as if time has literally stood still around here.<br />
Our little town of Evesham is a half hour drive away, and whilst it has it's own lovely & quirky buildings, there is something about seeing old Victorian city streets and houses, which does something inside of me.<br />
<br />
Witley Court was once a very popular Manor House for the English gentry and housed many a party for the rich and (probably) famous.<br />
In 1937 it was ravaged by fire and left to enter a state of decline.<br />
It has been taken into the hands of English Heritage now, which is a really good thing as it means it should stay standing for a long time to come.<br />
The house is but a shell, with old underground passageways, and multiple levels above.<br />
You really do have to let you mind wander to imagine what it would have looked like once upon a time.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There you have it. A head full of inspiration no?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I came away with enough info to make up 3 new scents in addition to the 2 I already had on hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The three scents in inspiration are:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i>Witley Court: </i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Story: Witley Court - A derelict country manor house, long ago ravaged by fire and left to fall into decline.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The basement full of dark passageways that carry the ghosts of housekeepers and children, it's grounds covered with majestic trees and scurrying wildlife, and the cackle of Green Woodpeckers filling the outside air with their mischievous laughter. A combine in the distance casts clouds of orange dust as it cuts through late summer barley.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Scent: Oak leaves, Lemon-scented Fir trees, Black Spruce & Scotch Pine, Hay absolute, Copaiba balsam, Labdanum & Frankincense with hints of sticky Benzoin, Oakmoss and smoke. Utter perfection and England at it's glorious best.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i>Lughnasadh:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Story: Made to mark the beginning of the Gaelic harvest and to welcome the changing colours of late summer/early autumn.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>A lakeside walk, Indian balsam leans towards the water, a canopy of Gunnera leaves creates shade from the ever-hot sun.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>A mighty oak stands proud at the front of the old Manor, it's protective branches reaching out as far as the eye can see.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Rhododendron bushes, gnarled and as old as the hills line the pathways, Pine cones nestle in amongst long summer grasses, the last of the summer flowers, vibrant and sweet smelling, bloom one last time & walnuts sit green in their coats as they ripen on the bough. Crystal clear trickling water ambles on downstream and open Waterlilies rest casually on top of the lake water. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Scent: Patchouli, Frankincense, Labdanum & Ho Wood sits beneath Lavender, sparkling Orange & Lime with heart notes of Geranium leaf, Black Spruce, Rose absolute and the barest hint of woodsmoke on the wind.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i>Mama Didn't Listen So I Told The Bees:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Story: An early Autumn evening, a melancholy air mists your being. Saddened and feeling quite alone you take a walk. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Deer & muntjac graze their way across an open field, buzzards fly overhead, closely followed by rooks & crows. Across the way you see the farmer walk out of a copse at the side of a deep wood, pipe casually resting at the side of his mouth and followed by trail of smoke from smouldering burlap & pine. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>As you approach the wild hum of 40,000 bees fills the air. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>You sit at the foot of the hive and begin to tell them your thoughts, and seemingly they listen. Slowly, relief washes over you and happiness prevails once more.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Scent: A heavy blossom honey, the nectar collected from Myrtle bushes, Orange blossoms, Ylang Ylang blooms & Jamarosa grass, the hive made of Himalayan Cedar & Camphorwood. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>A deep resinous base aroma of Myrrh, dark Vanilla, Cypress, Bergamot and Vetivert.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All three are 100% essential oil blends where I have used over 10 different oils in order to perfect the scent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Other scents available in the Autumn line up are:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i>Sparklebox:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Story: A curious carved wooden box found in an old curios shop in Summertown, Oxford, UK. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The lid closed & the box locked for all eternity, until.....</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>You prise it open, as the lid is slowly lifted hundreds of tiny fireflies grace the air. A tiny slip of paper falls to the floor. A spell conjured long ago reads 'Remember the law of three, and only good things will come to thee'.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Scent: Sugar-dusted Orange wheels, Italian Mandarins, Dark & Sweet Amber resin and Black Madagascan Vanilla beans.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i>Owlett's End:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Story: A corn field long past its cutting date houses a derelict old town house, black beams exposed & dull white paint slowly peeling off the brickwork. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Owls nest in the eaves, dust-covered cobwebs hang over the windows, a rustling wind whistles through the old back porch, old books piled high along with half-finished paintings, old mirrors & rusting signage. As you look up the faces of children in the upper windows reflect your gaze.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Sitting in the seat of a rocking chair rests a lovers keepsake box - the inside full of curious spices, long forgotten spells & dried tears.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>The Scent: Simmering Black Tea, Clary Sage & Coriander leaves, Nutmeg dust & Cinnamon sticks, sticky dark Orange oil and Blackened Cardamom pods. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i>Toffee Moon Face:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Inspiration: Do you remember The Magic Faraway Tree? Then you will remember Saucepan Man, Silky & Moonface too!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Housed inside the tree are many 'lands'. Our favourites include The Land of Spells, The Land of Topsy Turvy, The Land of Magic Medicines and The Land of Goodies. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Our soap is particularly inspired by Mr. Moonface - who loves to eat Toffee!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All scents will be available as Handmade Cold Process Soap, Olfactory Bathing Grains, Bubbling Sugar Buff, Body Whip & Aromatic Oil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have also made a short run of 4 different whipped soaps, scented with Autumn inspired scents (not the ones above) such as Pear, Plum, Cider & Vanilla.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br />
I am pretty much all set to go for our release on Sunday.<br />
We have some new scents this year and a whopping 14 different soap varieties (some test batches in that number) on offer.<br />
There are 7 main scents, which include the following:<br />
<br />
<b>Black Sands</b> - The purest, darkest Black Patchouli oil. An essence to completely wash away all negativity & stress, leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed.<br />
<br />
<b>Cold Pillow</b> - A cold pillow filled with Cotswold Lavender buds, Geranium leaves & Indian Vetiver grass roots sits on top of a feather bed, ready for you to rest your weary head. <br />
NB: The name Cold Pillow came from my nephew, Ethan, who as a small child always carried a cold pillow with him for comfort.<br />
<br />
<b>Rolling Hills</b> - A patchwork of rolling hills, little copses and secret hideaways. The scent of dark green Juniper bushes, Cedar & Pine trees, Lavender rows and hints of plump, green Limes.<br />
<br />
<b>St. Ives Bay</b> - Softly lapping waves of azure blue, A warm, salty sea breeze, Mineral-rich seaweed and a hint of Mediterranean Orange Zest.<br />
<br />
<b>Urban Jungle</b> - The old favourite is back again. We have been producing this soap for about the past 3 years. A fresh, aquatic blend of wet jungle notes. Freshly cut Bamboo canes, Indonesian Patchouli, Frankincense resin & plump Lemons ripe for the picking.<br />
<br />
<b>The Warrior</b> - A salty, briny, wooden war ship misted with sea spray. The scent of tarred rigging ropes, crates of Israeli figs, citrus fruits & rich, luscious spices warmed by the sun and finally the rarest and most pure Frankincense & Amber resins wrapped in sail cloth.<br />
<br />
Here's a few pics from the shelves...<br />

This afternoon (Friday) I have a new batch of Black Honey soap to cut up, and the above soaps to package.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My back has been very painful this week, and to top that off I came down with a really horrid head cold again...seems I just keep getting ill whenever I stop production after working on release soaps.<br />I guess when I get time to chill, this is what happens. My old boss from the nursery, Bob Brown used to say the same thing. You go hell for leather with work, and when you come to stop and get a bit of rest illness kicks in! So odd, and so annoying and maybe a reminder to ones self to take more breathers during production. Gah!<br /><br />Anyway, I'm all good today and looking forward to the weekend. I gotta rest up as next week will more than likely be a bit mad.</div>

Thanks for reading </div>

We went to visit the Ashmolean museum for the second time. It's been a couple of years since we last went and quite a lot has moved/changed.</div><div>The last time I went I didn't have the time or the head space to really enjoy the paintings and the tapestries and the India dept. as I would have liked so this time since it was just Matt and I, we strolled around looking at the items, which stirred something inside us both.</div><div>Matt of course was checking out all the pottery (he's a slipware potter if you didn't know) and I fell in love with the Indian God sculptures and the Linens, the Egyptian Gold and the areas dedicated to all the great painters.</div><div>Walter Sickert though was the one who's paintings made me stop dead in my tracks. Not because I have anything in common with the paintings, but because they are so thought provoking and rather ahead of their time.</div><div>This one above just blew me away. I stood in front of it for quite a while before Matt found me.</div><div>I took this close up pic along with the storyboard for you all to see.</div><div>I love the expressions and the bottle on the mantlepiece and how everything in the home is as it should be...apart from the occupants.</div><div>Saddening. She has such a flair for creating the ultimate in textured tops and for creating a want for her products inside me so deep that I want to buy her soaps all the time just lately. Her video's also chill me out so much so that I watch them before slumber.</div><div></div><div>Anyways, this soap is a one off from me. I tweeted about this soap seizing on me yesterday. It decided to go on me just as I needed to do my dots. I only just managed to save it, but it didn't come out as good as it normally does. Never mind, at least it wasn't a total disaster.<br />Because my soap batter thickened too quickly, I had to layer instead of the usual random pours.<br />I actually quite like the layering. It came out good. Not too perfect.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8yd3GWKluxoCzpu9v4QSJx8haNQZxf6tb7w00-kHfR7GYg7FAOfs7dzJqPxe0iKWiHDzWC4n4WRhq5sUkMhYneXYcsOYVMqLybtRbfMqv0KmBfRwVBbZEDYpXw36B6ogUmj98WuVkxA8/s1600-h/herbaceous+005.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 258px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443768289470627410" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8yd3GWKluxoCzpu9v4QSJx8haNQZxf6tb7w00-kHfR7GYg7FAOfs7dzJqPxe0iKWiHDzWC4n4WRhq5sUkMhYneXYcsOYVMqLybtRbfMqv0KmBfRwVBbZEDYpXw36B6ogUmj98WuVkxA8/s320/herbaceous+005.jpg" /></a><br />Herbaceous cut up on Sunday. This soap has such a good scent...even if I do say so myself.<br />It's a blend of Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Marjoram and Litsea Cubeba (may chang).<br />A very refreshing herbal scent with a lemon top note. One of my ultimate favourites.<br />The colour was created after looking at my trusy Farrow & Ball paint chart...again!<br />Such a good way to think up colours. This duck egg blue was created with TD, ultramarine blue & chromium green oxide.<br />A good seller at <a href="http://www.capability-online.co.uk/pages/3142/Home.htm">Capability</a> in Cheltenham. nice peaks.
A newbie.
I dunno why but I had this 'orange' thing going on in my head for a few days, so I thought before I have to re-produce all of my regular range of soap, I'll get this one outta my system. It kept eating away at me. Sometimes, the need to create a new one gets to you. It can sometimes be a chore when making the same soaps over and over....for me anyway...anyone else?
So...a bit of pad 'n pen action brought me to an essential oil combo of Sweet Orange, Clove Bud, Patchouli & Ginger. As I write, I'm thinking there's another oil that I added, but I can't remember right now if there is or not! Will have to check my notes...but I can't remember where I put those either.
Never mind. They'll turn up.
Now, I'm not a fan of ginger when smelling it straight outta the bottle...to me it smells somewhat 'doggie'....or rather like 'doggie biscuits', but when added into a blend in very small quantities I find it very, very pleasant.
Even when cutting, this soap smelled divine and after a few days curing the scent has changed a little more into a 'fresh linen'-like scent. Very nice, especially when created naturally.
I didn't have a name until I cut it.
When I sliced the batch open, the balls looked like moons and the colour looked like harvest hay. So, there was my little soap making up it's own name all by itself.
I bring you 'Harvest Moon'.
Funny, I used to sell an Echinacea plant called just that too....but it died every time I tried to grow it.
Hopefully, this soap will live long...and prosper.FuturePrimitive Soap Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12417261418364935496noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6385969451342587451.post-46856013909889890482010-01-10T17:21:00.000+00:002022-02-22T14:52:11.765+00:00from soil 'n trees 'n leaves to soap molds...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQRQcyaR70PCoQ32tTWUfejWoU63eG5QdsbAloxW-L7jZ0lA5zTHa2soclu_jWCx3Ycvow3SzT_-GyKdgyTp3NyxapLZqgPkII5j_0-vOsGx-YJgsBwjxlt2Qn4PzKYiDcuoHn6t0WeIE/s1600-h/potters+bar.png"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425179151974598930" style="WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 281px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQRQcyaR70PCoQ32tTWUfejWoU63eG5QdsbAloxW-L7jZ0lA5zTHa2soclu_jWCx3Ycvow3SzT_-GyKdgyTp3NyxapLZqgPkII5j_0-vOsGx-YJgsBwjxlt2Qn4PzKYiDcuoHn6t0WeIE/s320/potters+bar.png" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkD4sb5QSp-pLiFc_x43_F-LDAaaIRyE7WKLJKT1fmDLljCAi4X2gHnbF6kG5AckKkld4k8gmP-bt1ggpoqAmtQlPtWstuAXM87nWZ5Fef1f_y-7qOeHcvGBrgQ_J7gB9w-DVu6IorftI/s1600-h/03.02.2009+001.jpg"></a>I have a stack of soap to make at the mo, so what better time to show you how I make 'Potters Bar'...?<br />I have made a conscious decision to discontinue my organic range of soap and haul 'em on over to the botanical range, which after looking at figures from last year was the most popular range and the one most talked about. Nothing like looking at the details to see which bit of your mini business you are getting right. Yes, that means there will be no more fragrant range or organic range, but there will be lots of new soaps made with 100% natural ingredients all scented with essential oils to be getting stuck into instead. So as it stands, I shall have a botanical soap range along with some more new products including the egg bombs from my last post.<br />Another reason for quitting the organic is the rising cost of organic essential oils and organic palm oil. I'm all for fair trade, and for sourcing products sustainably but for now the organics must wait....until the price drops!<br />Right, now that I've told you...here's how botanical Potters Bar soap is made along with a rundown of the ingredients used to produce it.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4y-1yvqVmRIdWbdKOkHh1OKleDcWsH0tjMYQcZZ5EP7lYL2MPpf0p8joBVNMuJ0Pf-qrm3g0tYGbJ_pOJINchg2SS9DsLnmzEZWeIZsT_j3BsVVbkkSJQ9yMJokJi2DdcvBkXNHGlzGY/s1600-h/tiggy+fiander.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425170433541315058" style="WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4y-1yvqVmRIdWbdKOkHh1OKleDcWsH0tjMYQcZZ5EP7lYL2MPpf0p8joBVNMuJ0Pf-qrm3g0tYGbJ_pOJINchg2SS9DsLnmzEZWeIZsT_j3BsVVbkkSJQ9yMJokJi2DdcvBkXNHGlzGY/s320/tiggy+fiander.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />well obviously that's me.. in my new apron that mummy bought for me for xmas...nice huh!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj7XgBI-qW19KcLcwuIEc5Fqf21u8MUHfyYxewrbxbUh27OEy7nTsYfNcXte3ZsetYaNZ_2DqeXiAaW89w3nktBoXAosMTnzPxPXyq7N7u7AZwLF40dXoqyAat5ZSaaLt7wBm43NmYFvY/s1600-h/12.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425170095345886674" style="WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj7XgBI-qW19KcLcwuIEc5Fqf21u8MUHfyYxewrbxbUh27OEy7nTsYfNcXte3ZsetYaNZ_2DqeXiAaW89w3nktBoXAosMTnzPxPXyq7N7u7AZwLF40dXoqyAat5ZSaaLt7wBm43NmYFvY/s320/12.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />caustic soda mixed with mineral water (yes there is a little residue from the caustic floating on the top....it happens sometimes).<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPjfLvp5zfM5bkvTVOI-5mr8mzOP2SBXhlh6BToU3nJ2U3zDCcCk7Psw4fVY5oTYQM6Vo8g3v-nyKATtqtDDDqDrRX5CGIFcyJ2pkeUDROGSWF0T3Hcq666m2-AYqgUUBn6Y8_R-R6VxE/s1600-h/13.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425169710188475026" style="WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPjfLvp5zfM5bkvTVOI-5mr8mzOP2SBXhlh6BToU3nJ2U3zDCcCk7Psw4fVY5oTYQM6Vo8g3v-nyKATtqtDDDqDrRX5CGIFcyJ2pkeUDROGSWF0T3Hcq666m2-AYqgUUBn6Y8_R-R6VxE/s320/13.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />essential oils..left to right: fennel (foeniculum vulgare), lemon (citrus limon), lavender (lavandula angustifolia), eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus). I know that a combination of sodium hydroxide & water is mixed with fats & oils to create a chemical reaction known as saponification....<br />What I didn't realise is that when doing my organic content calculation I do not have to include the water or the sodium hydroxide weights...<br />So...after thinking and believing my organic range to be just 65% organic, I came to the realisation (after re-calculating) that they are in fact 97.3%! YES!<br /><br />For those who don't quite get it...here's the thing.<br />Sodium Hydroxide and water are mixed together (and referred to as lye) and poured into fats and oils to make what we call 'soap'.<br />As soon as you pour your lye solution into the fats & oils, a process called 'saponification' starts to take place. The mix is now on its way to becoming soap.<br />After the soap has rested in its mold for 24 hours, and has cured (for up to 6 weeks), the sodium hydroxide and 99% of the water has evaporated, which means these ingredients are no longer components of the finished batch.(the water is latent).<br />So...what you're left with are your hard, cured bars of wonderful, skin-loving soap.<br />So....basically, the lye mix is only used to make the soap...the soap does not contain it, so it is not necessary to include the sodium hydroxide or the water content when doing an organic calculation.<br />Easy peasy!<br /><br />Hope that makes sense to you all.<br /><br />After contacting the Soil Association, this is the info they gave to me so it's only right and proper that I pass it on.<br /><br />Now then...the next step is to get my soaps certified as organic.<br />No problem...well.....just a little cash flow issue.<br />It costs £250 + VAT to get them assessed.<br />Then...a futher £580 per year to keep the certification.<br /><br />More sales needed!<br /><br />I will endeavour to get this sorted, but in the meantime....I'M SO HAPPY!</div>FuturePrimitive Soap Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/12417261418364935496noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6385969451342587451.post-78181790669760818282009-10-25T18:26:00.000+00:002022-02-22T14:52:52.838+00:00on a roll....'Cyclone' Botanical Soap <br />
